Jazz Point Ibiza · 2020
The first edition of Jazz Point Ibiza took place on 6, 7 and 8 March 2020, launching what would become one of the Mediterranean's most distinctive jazz festivals. Organised by Ibiza Music Agency together with J. Chriss & Co. of New York City, the inaugural edition placed Ibiza firmly on the map of the international jazz scene, drawing coverage from local and national press and earning immediate calls from audiences, media, and local authorities for a return.
The festival opened on Friday 6 March at Heart Ibiza — the iconic multi-sensory venue created by Albert and Ferran Adrià in partnership with Cirque du Soleil — with the Rick Margitza Quartet headlining. The internationally renowned saxophonist, who recorded and performed with Miles Davis, was joined by Trevor Coleman on keys and trumpet (three-time Emmy Award-nominated composer), Joe Sanders on bass, and Nasheet Waits on drums. Special guests Alex Sipiagin on trumpet and Javier Vercher on saxophone added further depth to a remarkable opening night.
Saturday 7 March moved to Teatro Ibiza — the island's most celebrated live music venue — where the Jure Pukl Quartet took the stage. The Slovenian-American saxophonist and Titan Records recording artist was joined by Joel Ross on vibraphone (Blue Note Records artist, then already hailed as the most exciting young vibraphonist in America), Joe Sanders on bass, Nasheet Waits on drums, and once again Javier Vercher as special guest.
The festival closed on Sunday 8 March with a free outdoor concert at the old market in Ibiza Town, in front of the entrance to Dalt Vila, where the Big Band Ciutat d'Eivissa performed under the auspices of the Patronat Municipal de Música, joined by special guests Trevor Coleman and Javier Vercher.
The debut edition generated significant media coverage across Spain and internationally, with features in Diario de Ibiza, Periódico de Ibiza y Formentera, and German publication Costa del Sol Nachrichten, among others. The Facebook campaign reached over 60,000 people in the weeks leading up to the festival.
